The Innovation Award for Artificial Intelligence by Relativity recognizes an individual who is at the forefront of artificial intelligence adoption. As a specialized eDiscovery services provider that helps corporations and law firms securely find, understand, and learn from data, HaystackID is grateful for the nomination of Michael D. Sarlo in the category of Artificial Intelligence as part of the 2022 Relativity Innovation Awards program. Michael’s extensive expertise in this field is highlighted below.
Michael D. Sarlo — An AI Innovator with HaystackID
As Chief Innovation Officer, President of Global Investigations and Cyber Incident Response Services, and a seasoned member of HaystackID’s executive team, Michael has leveraged almost every structured and conceptual analytics toolkit available in the marketplace over the past decade. Often working with tens—or even hundreds—of terabytes of collected data, Michael uses AI-enabled technologies to deliver defensible, predictable, and favorable outcomes. He proactively educates teams on the use of structured analytics and technology-assisted review workflows, positioning them to negotiate for the use of these technologies from the very beginning of a matter.
In 2021, Michael was selected as the winner of the Innovation in Litigation and Discovery Solutions category of the Legalweek Leaders in Tech Law Awards for his approach to applying quantitative analytics and AI to limit the scope of production within a repository of terabytes of Slack and other short form message data. This work was on behalf of a Silicon Valley technology-enabled financial services firm that was responding to a DOJ Second Request in relation to a multi-billion dollar acquisition. The project opened pathways for other organizations to negotiate for more informed analysis, and ultimately production, of complex data types during Second Requests.

+Duration: 60 Minutes
With the increasing importance of privacy and security in today’s business world coupled with the advancement and acceptance of transaction technologies ranging from blockchain and cryptocurrencies to non-fungible tokens (NFTs), today’s digital forensics professionals are behind the proverbial power curve if they do not have a basic understanding of these emerging technologies. They are further behind that curve if they do not understand the investigational considerations and challenges of these technologies as they move from aspirational advancements to accepted and practical business tools.
During this expert session led by two of the world’s leading cybersecurity, information governance, and legal discovery digital forensics experts, presentation attendees will learn the foundational basics of blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and NFTs, discuss an examination of raw data on blockchain ledgers, research specific addresses and transactions as part of an investigational process, and consider NFTs from an investigational and eDiscovery perspective.
[Webcast] Data Mining in Incident Response: Managing Risk and Spend through An Effective Evidence-Based Approach
+August 31, 2022
+Time: 12:00 PM ET
+Duration: 60 Minutes
Data mining has increasingly become one of the largest expenses during a cyber incident, often leaving claims professionals with blown budgets and insured clients in high-risk scenarios when assumptions about their data (and what may lurk within) dictate the operationalized response towards providing notice to affected parties after a breach.
A lack of standards amongst breach coaches, claims professionals, and the vendors who consult on and perform data mining work has resulted in an unmanageable situation for insurers, despite there being repeatable, defensible methods to stage, understand, and act on sensitive data utilizing workflows that are established in the scientific method and eDiscovery in general during litigation.
This session will highlight the risks of over and under notice of impacted individuals in a cyber incident and will discuss key checkpoints ahead of and throughout the data mining process, while giving claims professionals a new understanding of the types of levers they can be pulling internally at their organizations, and with their partners to optimize, manage, and establish repeatable processes.
